People & Payroll
From hiring to payslips — people operations with structure and compliance.
The People & Payroll module brings discipline to every stage of the employee lifecycle. Onboarding, attendance, leave, payroll, statutory compliance, and exit — managed in one place with automatic posting to Finance and visibility through the Self-Service Portal.
What this module solves
Managing people in an Indian business means juggling statutory requirements that change frequently — PF wage ceilings, ESI thresholds, TDS slabs under two regimes, gratuity rules, minimum wages that vary by state. Most payroll solutions handle computation but break down when you need integration — connecting attendance to payroll, payroll to accounting, or employee data to task management.
The People & Payroll module treats payroll as the final output of a well-managed people operation, not a standalone calculation. Attendance data flows in automatically. Leave policies enforce themselves. Statutory compliance is computed, not manually applied. And when payroll runs, the financial entries post to Finance without the HR team touching a journal voucher.
For organisations growing from 50 to 500 employees, the module scales without architectural changes. The same system that processes payroll for 50 handles 5,000 — with the same compliance rigour and audit trail.
Without this module
Payroll runs on spreadsheets with manual statutory calculation, leaving room for PF/ESI errors that surface during inspections.
Attendance data is captured in one system and payroll in another, with a monthly reconciliation ritual that consumes 2-3 days.
Leave balances are maintained manually, leading to disputes when employees claim they have balance the system does not show.
Full & final settlement takes 30-45 days because clearance, asset recovery, and calculations happen on email threads.
Investment declarations are collected on paper, and TDS adjustments happen in bulk at year-end — causing large March deductions.
HR has no dashboard — every headcount question requires a fresh report request to the payroll vendor.
Core capabilities
Employee Master & Organisation Structure
Maintain comprehensive employee records — personal details, employment history, bank accounts, statutory numbers, emergency contacts. Organise by department, designation, grade, and reporting hierarchy.
Attendance Management
Capture attendance through biometric integration, manual marking, or shift-based rosters. Handle late marks, half-days, overtime, and compensatory off with configurable policies per grade or department.
Leave Management with Policy Engine
Configure unlimited leave types — CL, PL, SL, compensatory, restricted holidays — each with accrual rules, carry-forward limits, encashment eligibility, and probation restrictions. Leave balances update in real time.
Payroll Processing
Run monthly payroll with configurable salary structures — basic, HRA, special allowances, deductions. Handle arrears, increments, bonuses, and variable pay. Process full payroll for 500+ employees in under a minute.
Statutory Compliance (PF, ESI, TDS)
Automatic PF and ESI computation based on current rates and wage ceilings. TDS calculation with Section 80C, 80D, HRA exemption, and regime selection. Generate challan-ready data for direct filing.
Department & Cost Centre Allocation
Allocate salary costs across departments, cost centres, or projects. When an employee works across divisions, their salary splits proportionally — and Finance sees the allocation automatically.
Onboarding Workflows
Digital onboarding with document collection, policy acknowledgement, asset assignment, IT account creation triggers, and probation milestone tracking — from offer acceptance to confirmation.
Exit & Full-and-Final Settlement
Structured separation workflow — resignation acceptance, notice period management, clearance from departments, asset recovery, leave encashment, gratuity calculation, and final settlement with tax adjustment.
Loan & Advance Management
Track salary advances, festival loans, and company loans with EMI deduction schedules. Automatic deduction from monthly payroll with interest calculation where applicable.
Payslip Generation & Distribution
Generate professional payslips in PDF with full earnings and deduction breakdown. Distribute via email or make available through the Self-Service Portal. Payslips include YTD figures and tax computation summary.
Key workflows
Onboarding to First Payroll
New employee data captured during onboarding flows directly into the payroll master. Joining date, salary structure, statutory numbers, and bank details are all captured once. The first payroll run picks up the new employee automatically with pro-rata calculation.
Leave Request to Approval
Employee submits a leave request through the portal or app. The system validates against balance and policy, routes to the reporting manager, and on approval, updates the leave ledger and attendance calendar simultaneously.
Attendance to Payroll
Daily attendance feeds into a monthly attendance register. Late marks convert to deductions based on policy. Overtime triggers additional pay. The payroll engine picks up the finalised attendance data, ensuring payslips reflect actual working days.
Resignation to Full & Final
From resignation acceptance, the system tracks notice period, triggers clearance from each department (IT, Finance, Admin, Library), calculates leave encashment and gratuity, recovers advances, and produces the final settlement statement with correct TDS treatment.
Increment Processing
HR processes annual increments by department or individual. New salary structures take effect from a specified date. The system handles arrears calculation if the increment is backdated, and payslips clearly show the revised and arrear components.
Who benefits
HR Manager
Complete visibility into headcount, department distribution, attrition patterns, and pending HR actions. Manage the employee lifecycle from a single dashboard instead of switching between five systems.
Payroll Officer
One-click payroll processing with automatic statutory computation. Validation checks flag anomalies before processing. Reprocessing a single employee does not require rerunning the entire payroll.
Department Head
Approve leave requests, view team attendance, and track department headcount and cost. No need to email HR for basic workforce data.
Employee
Self-service access to payslips, leave balances, tax computation, Form 16, and personal information updates. No dependency on HR for routine queries.
Finance Controller
Payroll postings land in the correct ledger heads automatically. Monthly provision entries, PF/ESI challan data, and TDS returns are generated without manual aggregation.
Dashboards & reports
Headcount & Attrition Dashboard
Department-wise headcount trends, joining vs. separation rates, and attrition drivers over rolling 12-month periods.

Organisation-wide leave utilisation by type. Employees approaching zero balance, carry-forward projections, and encashment liability.
Works with
Finance & Accounting
Monthly payroll postings create salary expense entries in the correct ledger heads — basic, HRA, PF employer contribution, ESI — with cost centre allocation. No manual journal entry needed.
Work Management
Employee data feeds into task assignment. When a team member is on leave or has resigned, the system flags their open tasks for reassignment.
Document Management
Offer letters, appointment letters, appraisal forms, and exit documents are stored in the employee document folder with version control and access restrictions.
Self-Service Portal
Employees access their payslips, apply for leave, submit expense claims, and update personal information through the portal — reducing HR dependency for routine queries by 80%.

Frequently asked questions
Does BoSS handle both old and new tax regimes for TDS?
Yes. Each employee can select their preferred tax regime at the start of the financial year. The payroll engine computes TDS based on the chosen regime, considering applicable exemptions and deductions. Employees can switch regime during investment declaration windows.
Can we run payroll for multiple locations with different salary structures?
Absolutely. You can define location-specific salary structures and statutory applicability. A Delhi office might have different HRA rates and metro allowances compared to a Jaipur branch — each is configurable independently while running under a unified payroll.
How does the module handle mid-month joiners and separations?
Pro-rata calculation is automatic. For joiners, salary is calculated from the date of joining. For separations, salary is computed up to the last working day. Both scenarios handle statutory deductions correctly for the partial period.
Is biometric device integration supported?
BoSS integrates with leading biometric devices and attendance systems. Punch data is imported and reconciled with shift schedules to generate attendance registers. Manual override options are available for corrections with audit trail.
Can employees submit investment declarations through the system?
Yes. Employees submit their Section 80C, 80D, HRA, and other investment declarations through the Self-Service Portal. HR reviews and approves declarations, and the payroll engine adjusts TDS projections accordingly.
